People tend to ignore one simple legal fact and its corollaries. The Catalonian independence seekers willingly and knowingly prepared for their declaration of independence in open violation of the Spanish constitution. Weeks before the vote in parliament that body´s legal advisors warned the speaker, the president of the autonomous region of Catalonia and the vice president that any such vote would be in open violation of the law of the land. The eager leaders declared that the popular will negated the constitution. The result of such decisions made it possible for them to call for a referendum. That vote simply ignored the laws of Spain and the laws of the autonomous region that these leaders had sworn to defend. Can we imagine a democratic nation ignoring its laws? Without laws we live in a jungle. The Spanish constitution won the support of nearly 70% of the Catalonian voters. Now the leaders are obliged to defend their illegal actions before the courts. This is not political oppression. Courts in Spain are, as in the USA, free. Mr. Puigdemont and his supporters pushed independence through parliament claiming massive public support in the referendum of Oct.1. That is farcical. Only a third of Catalonian voters went to the polls, at least once! The voting was a total scandal. Cases of ballot boxes arriving at polling stations with marked ballots already inside, with people filmed voting two or three times are only part of he fiction upon which the defense of the birth of the republic is based. These people are not martyrs. They are cynical, mediocre politicians who believe that what they want must be acceptable because if they want it, it must be OK. They are their own source of inspiration and justifications of their acts.
Let´s ask ourselves. If Nevada were to declare itself a sovereign republic with bingo as the national sport, what would the president do? Remember A. Lincoln? Can we imagine Donald Trump not defending the constitution? Well, … .
